Nations FC Edge Accra Lions to Go Top of Ghana Premier League Table
Nations FC soared to the summit of the Ghana Premier League after securing a crucial 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Accra Lions at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
A powerful second-half volley from midfielder Sadiq Alhassan proved to be the difference on Matchday 30, as the Kumasi-based side leapfrogged Bibiani GoldStars to claim first place in the standings.
Nations FC came into the match with clear intent, dictating the early tempo and dominating possession. They created multiple chances in the opening 45 minutes, but a resilient defensive display from Accra Lions and a superb save from goalkeeper Daniel Afful kept the scoreline goalless heading into the break.
The breakthrough came just after the hour mark when Alhassan latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the box and unleashed a thunderous volley into the net, leaving Afful with no chance.
The goal sparked urgency in the visitors, who began to push forward in search of an equaliser. Accra Lions posed more of an attacking threat in the latter stages of the game, but Nations FC’s defence stood firm.
Nations could have doubled their lead in the dying minutes, but Afful once again came to his side’s rescue with a spectacular one-on-one save.

Meanwhile, Accra Lions have slipped into the relegation zone and will now be under immense pressure to pick up points in their remaining fixtures to avoid the drop.
