Nii Lante Vanderpuye Advocates for Greater Investment in Boxing
Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has called for increased investment and attention to be given to boxing and other sporting disciplines in Ghana, , highlighting their potential to elevate the country’s status on the global stage.
He revealed this on the floor of Parliament.
Speaking on the need for a diversified approach to sports development, Vanderpuye emphasized the significant contributions of boxing to the nation’s sporting achievements.
“Boxing has achieved a lot for us. They’ve raised the flag of this country even more than football, but we don’t give it the attention it deserves,” Vanderpuye stated.
He further pointed out that the disproportionate focus on football has hindered the growth of other sports, particularly boxing, which has historically brought international recognition and medals to Ghana.
“If we could give a percentage of the attention we give to football to boxing and other sporting disciplines, maybe, we will not always be languishing at the last position on the medal table at the Olympic Games,” he explained.
Vanderpuye expressed optimism that with proper investment and support, Ghana could compete with leading nations in sports.
“We may be squaring it up with the Americans, the British, the Australians, and the Chinese on the medal table. I believe seriously that if we really want to achieve much in sports, we must be ready to invest in the sport,” he concluded.
