Nations FC defender Christopher Nettey has shed light on the deep-seated security concerns within the Ghana Premier League, revealing that some players deliberately fake injuries or pick up yellow cards to avoid playing at certain intimidating venues.

Nettey’s comments come in the wake of violent incidents at Nsoatre and Elmina, which have raised serious questions about safety in Ghanaian football.

Speaking to 3Sports, Nettey admitted that the fear of violence at some stadiums has pushed players to take extreme measures to protect themselves.

“A policeman once told me he wasn’t ready to work on a particular day, meaning if I got attacked, I could be beaten to death,” he recounted.

“I know some players who fake injuries to avoid certain venues, while others intentionally pick up cards to escape those fixtures due to intimidation,” he disclosed.

While the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced enhanced safety measures ahead of the league’s return, Nettey believes the real change must come from within the football community.

“The GFA can introduce safety protocols, but the real change must come from the supporters and the players themselves,” he stressed.

The Ghana Premier League, which was suspended following the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Nana Pooley, is set to resume on March 7, after his final funeral rites on March 6.
