Black Starlets assistant coach Nana Kweku Agyemang has praised his team’s growing defensive solidity following back-to-back shutouts in recent pre-tournament friendlies against Port City and Koforidua Semper Fi.

Ghana’s U-17 side began their double-header with a narrow 1-0 victory over Division One League leaders Port City, with skipper Joseph Narbi netting the decisive goal early in the contest. The Starlets then rounded off the day with a convincing 2-0 triumph over Semper Fi at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, February 18, extending their positive run.

Reflecting on the performances, Agyemang stressed that the clean sheets were an encouraging sign after the team had conceded in earlier warm-up games.

“We want to know how they react when they are playing against these sides. The fact that they didn’t concede, that’s good,” the assistant coach said.

He added that recent defensive lapses had been a concern but noted clear improvement in the latest outings.

“Last week we played against Na God and another team. I think we conceded in both games. Although we still won, but we conceded in both games,” Agyemang explained.

“So, the fact that this time around they didn’t concede, it tells a lot about the work that we are doing at the moment. I think that the boys did well.”

The results highlight the technical team’s emphasis on defensive organisation, fitness, and tactical discipline as the Starlets fine-tune preparations for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

With the tournament fast approaching, the young Ghanaian side appear to be gaining momentum, offering optimism that they will arrive on the continental stage well-prepared and defensively compact.
