Karim Zito Dismisses Rumours of Rift Between Amoah and Opoku, Calls for Greater Team Focus
Interim head coach of Asante Kotoko, Abdul Karim Zito, has brushed off claims of animosity between strikers Albert Amoah and Kwame Opoku, describing their recent on-field decisions as a result of individualism rather than personal rivalry.
Rumours of tension between the duo began swirling after Kotoko’s narrow win over Aduana Stars, where Opoku opted to go for goal instead of setting up Amoah in a clear scoring position. A similar incident occurred in the Super Clash against Hearts of Oak, this time with Amoah choosing not to assist Opoku.
Addressing the speculation after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Hearts of Oak, Coach Zito said there is no bad blood between the players.
“During our first match [against Aduana Stars], Amoah should have given the ball to Opoku, and today too, look at what has happened,” Zito told journalists.
“I think it’s not about rivalry, it’s about lack of focus and self-centeredness. Everybody wants to score to feel important, and that’s why in Europe they attach much importance to assists. So it’s not rivalry but rather self-centeredness.”
The experienced coach emphasized that the technical team is working on improving the players’ decision-making in the final third. He noted that building better chemistry and team awareness will be key as the club pushes for the title.
“The most important thing is that we are creating chances,” he added. “What we must do now is ensure we finish them. That’s what we are working on in training.”
Zito also reaffirmed his belief in Kotoko’s title aspirations, urging fans to remain patient and supportive as the team continues to gel and improve.
With the Ghana Premier League title race heating up, Kotoko are still firmly in the hunt, and the coach is optimistic that improved teamwork and execution will be vital in the final stretch of the campaign.
