Kim Björkegren Hails Black Queens’ “Amazing” 3-0 Win Over Egypt in WAFCON Qualifier
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has praised his players following their commanding 3-0 triumph over Egypt in the first leg of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers on Thursday evening in Ismailia.
The Ghanaian side produced a disciplined and dominant display to secure a vital away victory, taking a major step toward qualification for next year’s continental showpiece.
Ghana broke the deadlock three minutes before halftime through Doris Boaduwaa, whose fine finish gave the visitors a deserved lead after sustained pressure.
Egypt’s hopes of a comeback were further dashed in the 52nd minute when Habiba Essam Mohammed was sent off for a reckless challenge on Grace Asantewaa, leaving the hosts with ten players.
The Black Queens capitalized on their numerical advantage late in the game. Substitute Mary Amponsah doubled Ghana’s lead in the 85th minute with a clinical close-range effort before Grace Asantewaa sealed the win in stoppage time with a superb long-range strike.
Speaking after the match, Björkegren expressed immense satisfaction with both the performance and the result, acknowledging that the team had to overcome challenges after being apart for several months.
“You can see that we haven’t been together for a while. It doesn’t connect like it did a couple of months ago. But the energy was there, I believe that we did a lot of good things, and in the end, we did well,” he said.
The Swedish tactician admitted that the match was tough despite the comfortable scoreline but lauded his side’s determination and composure away from home.
“In the end, a difficult away game we won 3-0. The result is amazing. It’s put us in a good position to make sure that we make the next AFCON,” Björkegren added.
The victory gives Ghana a commanding advantage heading into the second leg, which will take place in Accra on Tuesday, October 28. The team is expected to return home on Friday to resume preparations for what could be their qualification-clinching fixture.
