Former Bibiani GoldStars head coach Frimpong Manso has emphasized the urgent need for Ghanaian clubs to improve the quality of players they recruit if they want to remain competitive both in the domestic league and on the African stage.

His comments come at a time when Ghanaian clubs have struggled to make deep runs in CAF competitions, with Asante Kotoko, Bibiani GoldStars and others falling short against financially stronger teams from North Africa.

Speaking on Adom TV’s “Fire for Fire” program, the experienced tactician highlighted the growing gap between Ghanaian clubs and their counterparts from North Africa, attributing it largely to differences in player quality and recruitment strategy.

“We need to improve the quality of players we bring in if we want to compete in Africa and in the league,” he said.

Manso, a former Asante Kotoko and Ghana international defender, noted that local clubs often rely heavily on inexperienced players, which makes it difficult to perform consistently in continental competitions.

He added that investing in quality players — whether locally developed or from other countries — would help Ghanaian teams challenge for honours in the CAF inter-club tournaments and also raise the overall standard of the Ghana Premier League.

Manso’s remarks have reignited the discussion about club management, recruitment policies, and the broader vision for Ghanaian football development at both the domestic and continental levels.
