Karim Zito Starts Kotoko Tenure with Vital Win Over Aduana FC
Interim head coach of Asante Kotoko, Karim Zito, got off to a winning start as he guided the Porcupine Warriors to a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Zito, appointed earlier this week following a rough patch under former coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, made an immediate impact by delivering a crucial three points. The win narrows Kotoko’s gap at the top of the Ghana Premier League table to six points and injects momentum ahead of next weekend’s mouthwatering clash against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in Accra.
Kwame Opoku was the hero of the afternoon, scoring the only goal in the 25th minute. The striker finished clinically, driving a low shot into the bottom corner after a well-worked move.
Aduana FC had a golden chance to level the score before halftime, but Kotoko’s goalkeeper Mohammed Camara produced a stunning penalty save in the 38th minute to preserve his side’s slender lead.
Although Kotoko enjoyed greater possession for large spells of the game, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. The hosts managed just five attempts on goal, compared to Aduana’s seven, but it was their single shot on target that made the difference.
For Aduana, the defeat extends their woes away from home and leaves them with plenty to correct before they host Berekum Chelsea in an all-important derby.
As for Asante Kotoko, attention now shifts to a blockbuster showdown against Hearts of Oak, a match that could have a significant bearing on the destiny of this season’s title race.
