Kamaldeen Sulemana Set for Two to Three Months Out With Knee Injury
Atalanta have suffered a major setback in their preparations for the new season after Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana was diagnosed with a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee.
The 24-year-old winger is expected to spend approximately two to three months on the sidelines after sustaining the injury during a pre-season friendly against Schalke 04.
Sulemana was introduced as a second-half substitute but was forced off just minutes after entering the pitch. Subsequent medical examinations conducted by Atalanta confirmed the extent of the ligament damage.
The Ghanaian is now set to begin his rehabilitation programme immediately, with his return targeted for around November.
The setback comes at a frustrating time for Sulemana, who had hoped to use pre-season to build his fitness, gain valuable playing minutes and establish momentum ahead of the 2026/27 Serie A campaign.
His absence also presents a significant problem for Atalanta head coach Maurizio Sarri, who now faces limited options in the wide attacking positions.
The situation is particularly concerning on the left flank following the departures of Daniel Maldini and El Bilal Touré. Nicola Zalewski is currently regarded as the club’s main natural option in that position, while the right side also lacks experienced depth beyond young prospect Federico Cassa.
Sulemana’s injury could therefore influence Atalanta’s plans in the transfer market as the club considers whether additional reinforcements are required before the new campaign gets underway.
The Ghanaian joined Atalanta from Southampton and was expected to play an important role in the team’s attacking plans.
He will now focus on his recovery with the aim of returning to full fitness as quickly and safely as possible, while Atalanta must find solutions to cope with his absence during the opening months of the season.
