Captain Joseph Paul Amoah has challenged Team Ghana athletes to deliver memorable performances when the country hosts the African Athletics Championships later this month.

Ghana is preparing to welcome athletes from across the continent for the competition, which will run from May 12 to May 17 at the UG Sports Stadium. The event is expected to feature representatives from about 54 nations and more than 1,500 competitors, making it one of the major athletics events on the 2026 sporting calendar.

Speaking to 3Sports, Amoah expressed confidence in the readiness of the Ghanaian contingent, stating that preparations have gone well ahead of the championship.

“You saw what happened the last time, and we really liked the support. We are very prepared, and we have trained hard. We are going to come out here and make sure we put smiles on Ghanaians’ faces again,” he said.

The sprint star also addressed the expectations that come with competing at home, insisting that the pressure surrounding the event can serve as extra motivation for the athletes.

“There’s pressure, but we can only use it to motivate ourselves,” he added.

The championship is expected to provide an important platform for athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, scheduled for July 23 to August 2.

With home support behind them, Team Ghana will be aiming to make a strong impact as the country hosts one of Africa’s premier athletics competitions.
