Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku has described his first competitive start for the Black Stars as a dream come true after playing a key role in Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Istanbul Basaksehir center-back had previously featured in friendly matches but was handed his first official start in Ghana’s crucial qualifier.

Speaking to Flashscore, Opoku expressed his joy and gratitude for the opportunity.

“I’ve been really working hard and looking forward to getting a chance in the national team, and I knew such a day would come for me to help the team,” he said.

“For me, it’s always been a dream and a privilege to wear the national colors and defend the nation.”

The 26-year-old defender adapted quickly to Otto Addo’s three-back system, a tactical setup he is familiar with from club football. His solid performance at the heart of Ghana’s defense helped the team secure an important clean sheet.

With Ghana now sitting at the top of Group I, Opoku remains focused on the bigger picture.

“We know it’s not done yet, so we stay focused and make sure we get the job done,” he added.
