Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku has identified Ghana’s lack of cutting edge in attack as the biggest obstacle preventing the national team from competing at the highest level.
Following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the centre-back admitted that the team’s defensive resilience alone cannot deliver consistent success if it is not matched by greater efficiency in front of goal.
Ghana earned praise throughout the tournament for their disciplined defensive displays, frustrating opponents such as England and remaining difficult to break down. However, the Black Stars struggled to convert chances, a weakness that ultimately proved costly in the knockout stages.
Reflecting on the team’s performances, Opoku stressed that defenders cannot be expected to shoulder the burden for an entire match without support from the attacking unit.
“We can defend, defend, defend but if we don’t get that one goal to relieve pressure off the defense, then we can’t succeed. It’s not possible,” he said.
The defender believes Ghana must become more clinical in the final third if they are to compete consistently against the world’s elite teams.
As attention shifts to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and future international assignments, improving the team’s attacking output is expected to become a major priority for the technical staff.
