Andre Ayew Visits Black Queens, Offers Support Amid Bonus Dispute Ahead of Egypt Clash
Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has extended his support to the Black Queens as they prepare for their decisive 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Egypt, amid ongoing tensions over unpaid bonuses.
The Ghana skipper visited the women’s team at their Erata Hotel base in Accra on Monday, where he interacted with the players and offered words of encouragement ahead of Tuesday’s crucial second-leg encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ayew’s visit comes during a turbulent period for the Queens, who recently boycotted training over delays in the payment of $9,500 each, bonuses owed to them for securing third place at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco.
The players had initially refused to train over the weekend but called off the strike after separate interventions from Sports Minister Kofi Adams and GFA President Kurt Okraku, who both assured that the matter was being addressed.
The situation escalated to the Presidency, which has since directed that the outstanding payments be processed immediately, with efforts currently underway to release the funds to the players.
With the issue nearing resolution, the Black Queens are expected to resume training at 5 p.m. on Monday as they fine-tune preparations to protect their 3-0 first-leg advantage from Ismailia.
The Ghanaian side will be hoping to seal qualification to the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, as well as take a step closer to booking a spot at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
