Accra giants Hearts of Oak emerged winners of the 2025 Democracy Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over rivals Great Olympics on Friday evening at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The much-anticipated encounter between the two city rivals attracted a packed crowd, as fans filled the stands to witness another thrilling chapter of the Accra derby under the Democracy Cup banner.

The opening half produced an evenly balanced contest, with both teams creating half-chances but failing to break the deadlock. Great Olympics matched the Phobians in intensity, ensuring the first 45 minutes ended without a goal.

The decisive moment arrived in the second period when substitute Kofi Asmah made the difference. Coming off the bench, the forward capitalised on a rare opening in the 70th minute to slot home the only goal of the game, sealing victory for Hearts of Oak.

The solitary strike proved enough for the Phobians to reclaim bragging rights in the capital and lift this year’s Democracy Cup title.

The triumph marks a significant milestone for Hearts, who had narrowly missed out on the inaugural edition last year when Asante Kotoko defeated them in the final.
