Government Reaffirms Commitment to Stadium Safety at May 9 Disaster Memorial
Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring safety at all sports venues in Ghana during a heartfelt commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the May 9 Stadium Disaster.
The tragic incident, which occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2001 during a league match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, claimed the lives of 127 supporters in one of Africa’s worst stadium disasters.
Speaking at the memorial event held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, Mr. Adams called on fans to uphold discipline and condemned acts of hooliganism that continue to threaten the spirit of the game.
“Football is a game played with a lot of passion, but that in no way should move this passion to the level of violence, no matter the decisions and no matter the outcomes,” the Minister said.
He expressed particular concern over recent incidents of violence in Ghanaian football, including the tragic death of a supporter affectionately known as “Pooley.” He pledged that the Ministry, in collaboration with law enforcement, would ensure justice is served.
“The loss of Pooley recently shouldn’t have happened… The government of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and our ministry is determined to collaborate with the Ghana Police to make sure every single person behind this act is punished. We will not shield anybody. It doesn’t matter your status,” Adams warned.
The Minister also praised the work of the May 9 Disaster Fund, highlighting its contribution in supporting families affected by the tragedy. According to him, several children of the victims have successfully completed tertiary education thanks to the fund’s support.
The May 9 Stadium Disaster remains a sobering reminder of the importance of responsibility, respect, and reform in football.
