Glasgow 2026: Ghana to Be Represented by 40 Athletes
Ghana Olympic Committee president Richard Akpokavie has confirmed that Ghana will send a 40-member delegation to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The announcement was made during Saturday’s Annual General Meeting, where Akpokavie outlined the country’s preparation plans for the upcoming global competition.
According to the GOC president, the delegation will include athletes, coaches and technical officials who will represent Ghana at the Games scheduled for July and August next year.
“The plan is to send 40 athletes, coaches, medical officers, safeguarding officers and of course led by the Chef de Mission for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow,” Akpokavie stated.
The projected contingent represents a significant reduction compared to Ghana’s participation at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country travelled with 100 athletes made up of 60 men and 40 women.
The reduction follows major structural changes introduced by the Commonwealth Sport in 2024, when the sporting programme for Glasgow 2026 was cut from 19 disciplines to 10.
Several sports, including cricket, hockey, rugby sevens, squash and wrestling, were removed from the programme as part of cost-cutting measures after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from hosting the Games because of escalating financial concerns.
Despite the smaller delegation, Ghana is expected to compete strongly in the available disciplines as preparations intensify for the multi-sport event.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will run from July 23 to August 2 and will bring together athletes from countries and territories across the Commonwealth.
