FC Köln Sporting Director Highlights Key Qualities Behind Gideon Mensah Signing
Bundesliga club FC Köln are confident new signing Gideon Mensah will add greater strength and balance to their squad after completing the capture of the Ghana international on a long-term contract.
The Black Stars left-back joined the German side as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with French Ligue 1 outfit AJ Auxerre, ending a successful four-year spell in France.
Explaining the club’s decision to recruit the 27-year-old, FC Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler revealed that Mensah had been on the club’s radar for some time, with his consistent displays at both club and international level convincing them to make their move.
“We have been monitoring Gideon for quite some time and are delighted that we have been able to bring him to FC,” Kessler said.
“He brings international experience, delivered strong performances in France last season and confirmed that quality at the World Cup.”
Kessler also highlighted the defender’s tactical intelligence and commitment to the team, qualities he believes will make Mensah a valuable addition to Köln’s squad.
“Gideon is a player who consistently puts the team first and impresses with his tactical discipline, defensive strength and dynamism. With his profile, he will add quality and stability to our squad while strengthening our options in that position,” he added.
Mensah arrives in Cologne after establishing himself as one of Auxerre’s most dependable performers. During his time with the French club, he became a regular starter and earned praise for his defensive consistency and ability to contribute in attack.
The Ghanaian also enhanced his reputation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in every minute of the Black Stars’ campaign as Ghana progressed to the Round of 32.
FC Köln will now hope the experienced full-back can quickly settle into the Bundesliga and play a key role as the club targets a successful 2026/27 campaign.
