Ghana’s Black Satellites delivered a statement performance on Monday evening, edging defending champions Senegal 1-0 in a tightly contested Group C encounter at the Suez Stadium in the ongoing 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

Head coach Desmond Ofei made two changes to the team that earned a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in the opening fixture, bringing in fresh legs to solidify both midfield and attack.

In the 15th minute, midfielder Emmanuel Mensah latched onto a perfectly threaded through ball from Jerry Afriyie and calmly slotted past the Senegalese goalkeeper to give Ghana an early lead.

That strike turned out to be the only goal of the match, as Ghana adopted a disciplined and resilient approach for the remainder of the contest. Compact in defense and confident in transitions, the Black Satellites kept the Senegalese at bay throughout the first half.

Senegal, stung by the early blow, regrouped after the break and dominated possession. But Ghana’s defensive line, marshaled by goalkeeper Gidios Aseako, stood firm. Aseako was the hero of the night, pulling off no fewer than seven crucial saves to deny the reigning champions an equaliser.

With the victory, Ghana now sits jointly at the top of Group C alongside DR Congo on four points, while Senegal finds themselves in a must-win situation heading into the final round of matches.

Ghana will face the Central African Republic next, aiming to seal qualification to the knockout stages, while Senegal must beat DR Congo to keep their title defense alive.
