Ghana Premier League Set to Resume on March 7
The Ghana Premier League (GPL) is set to return on Friday, March 7, following a three-week suspension due to security concerns and incidents of hooliganism, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, comes after extensive deliberations and ongoing safety assessments at match venues across the country.
According to the GFA, the league’s resumption is subject to the completion of safety and security inspections at all stadiums. This assessment is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ensure that improved security measures are in place before the league resumes.
In response to the recent violence at stadiums, particularly the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Nana Pooley Frimpong, the GFA has conducted training sessions on the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025. These measures aim to curb hooliganism and improve the matchday experience for fans, players, and officials.

Asante Kotoko, who had requested stronger security assurances following the Nsoatre incident, has now declared their readiness to return to competitive football. The club will officially resume action on March 6, 2025, ahead of the league’s full return.
With the league set to restart, the GFA has outlined the schedule for upcoming matchdays:
- Matchday 20 – March 18-20, 2025
- Matchday 21 – April 1-3, 2025
- Matchday 22 – April 15-17, 2025
Additionally, Kotoko’s postponed MTN FA Cup Round of 16 fixture against Sekondi Eleven Wise has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
