Ghana are anxiously awaiting the results of medical assessments on goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi after the shot-stopper suffered an injury during the Black Stars’ 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced goalkeeper started Ghana’s Group L opener in Toronto but was forced off at halftime after struggling with an injury sustained during a first-half collision while attempting to thwart a Panama attack.

Despite receiving treatment and battling through the remainder of the opening period, Ati-Zigi was unable to continue after the break. His place was taken by Benjamin Asare, who delivered a composed performance to help Ghana preserve a clean sheet.

The Ghana Football Association has yet to provide a detailed update on the nature of the injury, with the goalkeeper expected to undergo further scans to determine the extent of the problem.

Ati-Zigi played a crucial role before his withdrawal, producing a key early save to keep Panama at bay during a challenging first half in which the Central Americans created the better opportunities.

The injury concern comes at a significant moment for the Black Stars, who are preparing for a crucial showdown against England in their second Group L fixture in Boston.

Should Ati-Zigi fail to recover in time, Asare is expected to be handed his first World Cup start after impressing during his second-half appearance.

For now, Ghana’s medical team will be hoping the upcoming scan delivers encouraging news as the Black Stars look to build on their winning start and strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stages for the first time since 2010.
