Edward-Mari Osei Boakye: The 13-year-old looking to excel as a polo player
Growing up in Ghana, it’s the dream of every child to be in a profession that is well-respected in his or her community. When the child decides to go into sports, football is one that they look out for in the same certain.
However, for Edward-Mari Osei Boakye, the story is quite different and he loves the road that he has been on for the past years.
The 13-year-old, over the weekend, hit a personal milestone as he scored the only goal in the exhibition game ahead of the final of the 2023 Trustee’s Cup at the Accra Polo Club.
For the youngster, scoring in the game is one thing that will live forever in his memory and that is all thanks to his dad, Gerard Osei Boakye.
“My dad introduced me to horse riding [at a young age]. When I started liking it, I got introduced to stick and ball and that was how all the swinging started. Eventually, I was introduced to this game,” he told Joy Sports.
His three months of learning the sport had paid off and he was only excited about what he achieved on Saturday, Edward-Mari also described how he achieved the match-winner.
“Scoring [in the exhibition game] means very much to me,” the teenager said wearing an adorable smile.
“At first, I didn’t think I could make it but then I committed, went for the risk and went for it [in the end, it worked].”
Edward-Mari didn’t share his delight alone on the day. The youngster had his mum and dad present who cheered him on now and then until the end of the presentation.
His mum couldn’t control her emotions seeing her son in the spotlight while the dad had a camera in his hands, capturing the wonderful moments that will go down in the family’s memory.
Playing professional polo is one area the Roman Ridge student is looking to exploit and he doesn’t shy away from what he desires.
“[About my future in polo] I am still thinking because I have a lot of things I am doing right now. Polo is just one of them,” he added.
“Sure, why not?” the young star answered immediately after being asked if he would love to pursue a long-term career in the sport.
If you are wondering what the long-term future will be for Edward-Mari, next year’s competitions at the Accra Polo Club will be ones to keep an eye on.
The 13-year-old has what it takes to excel in the sport and make a name not just for himself but also for his family and the country at large.
