Assistant coach Desmond Ofei has described Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico as an important opportunity to measure the progress of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The highly anticipated encounter on May 22 forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the global competition, where the Black Stars will compete in the expanded tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking to Flashscore, Ofei emphasised the quality of the opposition and the value of facing experienced international teams during the build-up to the World Cup.

“Mexico is a top-level opponent with a strong football culture, great intensity, and international experience, so this will be an important test for our group,” he said.

“These are the types of matches that help players grow, help coaches evaluate, and help a nation continue building for the future,” Ofei added.

The Mexico fixture will be followed by another preparatory match against Wales on June 2 as Ghana fine-tune plans for the tournament.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
