“Betting Tax Becomes a Nuisance When There Is No Accountability and Proper Use” – MP Adam Abdul-Salam
Member of Parliament for New Edubease, Hon. Adam Abdul-Salam, has voiced concerns over Ghana’s betting tax, stating that it becomes a nuisance when there is no clear accountability and proper use of the revenue generated.
The controversial betting tax, which was introduced in 2023, sparked widespread debate, particularly among the youth and stakeholders in the gaming industry, who argued that it negatively impacted earnings and participation.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show, he emphasized that taxation should not just be about collecting money but ensuring transparency in its utilization.
“The betting tax has become a nuisance to taxpayers. Sometimes, it is not just about the payment but the accountability and what the tax is used for,” he stated.
He urged the government to explore alternative ways of generating revenue instead of heavily taxing betting, which largely affects unemployed youth.
“The government should find another innovative way to raise tax for the country. It is not right to impose such a tax when the youth are not at work, only to take the little they have,” he added.
His comments add to the growing debate surrounding the betting tax, with many calling for a review to ensure fairness and transparency.
