Asamoah Gyan Rallies Black Queens Ahead of WAFCON 2026 Mission
National Teams Ambassador and former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has thrown his support behind the Black Queens as they intensify preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), urging the team to represent Ghana with pride in Morocco.
The continental tournament, which was rescheduled by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will take place from July 25 to August 16, with Ghana hoping to build on its third-place finish from the previous edition.
Gyan delivered his message of encouragement during a visit to the Black Queens’ training camp at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where the team held its second training session under head coach Kim Lars Björkegren.
The visit provided a morale boost for the squad as preparations continue for one of the most important competitions on the African women’s football calendar.
Speaking after observing the session, Gyan reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Ghana’s national teams and reminded the players that they have the backing of the country as they prepare for the tournament.
“As an ambassador for the national team, this is my job. I’ve always been very supportive of the national teams. I remember in 2014 and 2015 I told the Black Queens that if they win a tournament, I had something for them, it was about motivation.
“So for me, this role is natural. I’m here just to say hello and let them know that we, as Ghanaians, have not neglected them. We are very supportive. They should go there and make Ghana proud,” he said.
The former Ghana captain spent time interacting with players and members of the technical team, reinforcing the importance of confidence, unity and commitment as the Black Queens continue their preparations.
A total of 25 players participated in the training session, including late addition Linda Owusu Ansah, as the coaching staff worked on improving fitness levels, tactical awareness and team chemistry.
Under the guidance of Björkegren and his assistants, the Black Queens are expected to continue an intensive training programme over the coming weeks as they fine-tune their preparations for the tournament.
With expectations rising ahead of WAFCON 2026, Gyan’s visit served as a timely reminder of the support behind the team as they seek to challenge for continental honours and bring further success to Ghanaian football.
