Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has expressed optimism about the Black Stars’ prospects at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team has what it takes to progress beyond the group phase of the competition.

Ghana will be making another appearance on football’s biggest stage when the tournament kicks off in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars are seeking a stronger showing after suffering group-stage eliminations at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar. Essien believes the current squad possesses enough talent to avoid a similar outcome this time around.

“I think the team has the quality to make it out of the group phase. They were disappointing in the last World Cup in Qatar, and as a Ghanaian, the nation is also expecting the boys to do well,” the former Chelsea midfielder told talkSPORTS.

The ex-Ghana international pointed to the highly anticipated encounter against England as one of the marquee fixtures in the group but urged the players to remain focused on the broader objective of collecting results throughout the tournament.

“Ghana playing against England is a game everyone is looking up to, so let’s see what they can do, but they will have to take it game by game and make sure they win.”

Essien also emphasised that reaching the knockout rounds should be considered the baseline target for the Black Stars, while acknowledging that any further progress would be warmly welcomed by supporters across the country.

“If they can make it out of the group stage and then go to the next stage, and if something happens, I am sure the nation will be happy, but I have high hopes for the team to perform,” he said.

Ghana’s campaign will begin on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field before a blockbuster clash with England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. The Black Stars will then conclude their group-stage schedule against Croatia on June 27.

Carlos Queiroz’s side is currently based in the United States, where preparations for the tournament are continuing. Ghana are also scheduled to face Jamaica in a final warm-up match on June 10 before turning their full attention to the World Cup.

With expectations building ahead of the competition, Essien’s confidence reflects the belief among many former players and supporters that the Black Stars can make a significant impact and return to the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable run in 2010.
