Asamoah Gyan Hails Kwadwo Asamoah as His Most Underrated Teammate
Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan has lauded former Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah, describing him as the most underrated teammate he ever played alongside.
Gyan made the remark during an interview on TV3’s New Day program, where he reflected on the careers of some of his most memorable teammates in the national team.
“Kwadwo Asamoah had an incredible career. Just look at the clubs he played for — Juventus, Udinese, Inter Milan. I think people really slept on him,” Gyan said. “He’s easily the most underrated Ghanaian player I’ve played with.”
Kwadwo Asamoah, known for his versatility and football intelligence, enjoyed a stellar professional career in Europe. He rose to prominence at Udinese before making a high-profile move to Juventus in 2012. During his time in Turin, Asamoah played a crucial role in the club’s dominance in Serie A, helping them secure six consecutive league titles.
His performances did not go unnoticed. Asamoah was named CAF’s Most Promising African Player in 2010 and won the Ghana Player of the Year award in both 2012 and 2013.
On the international stage, Asamoah was equally influential. He represented Ghana in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and played in two FIFA World Cups — in 2010 and 2014 — establishing himself as a consistent and dependable presence for the Black Stars.
Despite his accolades and achievements, many within the football community have echoed Gyan’s sentiment, noting that Asamoah’s quiet demeanor and team-first approach may have led to his contributions being overlooked by the global football audience.
Asamoah officially retired from professional football in 2022, closing the chapter on one of the most accomplished careers by a Ghanaian player in European football.
