Amadu Mohammed Storms into Commonwealth Games Quarter-Finals with First-Round Knockout
Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed delivered a sensational performance to secure his place in the quarter-finals of the men’s 55kg boxing competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, needing less than two minutes to dispatch his opponent.
The reigning African Games champion overwhelmed Kiribati’s Eriu Temakau, forcing a stoppage after just 1 minute, 54 seconds of the opening round.
Mohammed imposed himself from the opening bell, landing a series of clean and powerful punches that quickly put Temakau on the back foot. The Ghanaian’s relentless attack resulted in two knockdowns, leaving the referee with little choice but to halt the contest before the first round ended.
Although Temakau managed to recover after the initial knockdown, he was sent to the canvas again moments later as Mohammed continued to dominate the exchange.
The emphatic victory keeps Ghana’s medal ambitions alive in the boxing competition, providing a timely boost after an earlier disappointment for the Black Bombers.
Earlier in the tournament, two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abdul Wahid Omar exited the men’s 65kg division after suffering defeat to England’s Patris Mughalzai in the Round of 32.
Mohammed arrived in Glasgow carrying high expectations after capturing gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra, and his commanding display has further strengthened his reputation as one of Ghana’s leading medal contenders.
The 55kg boxer will now turn his attention to the quarter-finals, where another victory would move him within touching distance of a place on the Commonwealth Games podium.
