Ghana`s Wpmen Boxing Campaign Ends at Glasgow 2026 as Bamfo and Abaitey Exit in Round of 16

Ghana’s hopes in the women’s boxing competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games came to an end on Sunday after Nancy Bamfo and Adelaide Dede Abaitey were both knocked out in the Round of 16.

Bamfo suffered a unanimous 5-0 defeat to Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde in the women’s 54kg division in a dramatic contest that featured three knockdowns.

The Ghanaian made the brighter start, sending Clyde to the canvas in the opening round. However, the Northern Irish boxer recovered impressively and gradually took control of the bout.

Clyde turned the fight around in the final round, knocking Bamfo down twice before securing a unanimous points victory to book her place in the quarter-finals.

Ghana’s challenge suffered another setback in the women’s 57kg category, where Commonwealth Games debutant Adelaide Dede Abaitey also bowed out after losing 5-0 to Fiji’s Jasmine Daunakamakama.

Abaitey struggled to recover after a difficult second round in which she was knocked down twice. Daunakamakama maintained control throughout the contest and comfortably progressed to the last eight on a unanimous decision.

The back-to-back defeats brought Ghana’s women’s boxing campaign to a close before the quarter-final stage, leaving the country without a female representative in the medal rounds.

Attention now shifts to Amadu Mohammed, who remains Ghana’s strongest medal prospect in the boxing competition.

The African Games champion booked his place in the men’s 55kg quarter-finals after producing a dominant first-round stoppage victory over Kiribati’s Eriu Temakau, ending the contest in just 1 minute and 54 seconds.

With Bamfo and Abaitey eliminated, Ghana’s boxing medal hopes now rest firmly on Mohammed as he looks to continue his impressive run and keep the Black Bombers in contention for a podium finish at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
