Zito Laments Missed Opportunity as Kotoko Stumble Again in Title Pursuit

Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito cut a disappointed figure after his side’s title ambitions suffered another setback following a 3-1 defeat to Heart of Lions at the Kpando Stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors found themselves on the back foot early, conceding twice before the break to hand the hosts firm control of the contest. Kotoko showed signs of revival when Samba O’Neil converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit, briefly reigniting hopes of a comeback.

That optimism, however, was short-lived. With 18 minutes left on the clock, Michael Ephson struck to restore Heart of Lions’ two-goal cushion, effectively sealing the result and deepening Kotoko’s frustration.

Reflecting on the outcome, Zito admitted the defeat was a painful blow, especially given the circumstances elsewhere in the title race.

“I missed it (the opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Medeama S.C). Seriously, I missed it. That is why I told you that I was not expecting this result because, to be honest with you, in terms of preparation, we prepared very well.”

The loss proved even more costly as league leaders Medeama S.C. had earlier fallen to Nations F.C., presenting Kotoko with a golden chance to cut the gap at the top to five points.

Sunday turned out to be unkind to several title contenders. Aduana F.C. were held to a scoreless draw by F.C. Samartex, while Accra Hearts of Oak also dropped points at home after sharing the spoils with Bechem United.

Those results opened the door for Bibiani Gold Stars, whose narrow 1-0 victory over Swedru All Blacks lifted them into second place on 37 points, now seven behind Medeama.

Kotoko will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for a high-profile home clash against Hearts of Oak on February 15, the same day Medeama welcome Aduana F.C. to Tarkwa in what promises to be a decisive round in the title race.
