Resolving Black Stars’ Captaincy Issue Key to 2026 World Cup Qualification- Kwasi Appiah
Former Black Stars coach James Kwasi Appiah believes Ghana’s senior national team stands a strong chance of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if lingering issues surrounding team captaincy are properly addressed.
The veteran coach, who led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, emphasized that resolving the leadership situation within the squad would foster unity and better performances during the qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with Luv FM in Kumasi, Appiah noted that Ghana’s current standing in the qualification campaign is promising, but internal matters—particularly captaincy—must be settled to avoid distractions.
“For me, the little advice I can give is that I’m really happy our position at the moment is not that bad,” he said. “Secondly, I am hoping that what I have heard is true—that they are trying to sort out the captaincy issue. If there are other issues, I hope they resolve them because, without unity, we cannot achieve anything. If they’re able to sort the captaincy issue, then it’s okay, because the players we have are quality.”
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March, Ghana will be aiming to put their internal matters behind them and focus on securing a spot at the global tournament, which will be hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
