Otto Addo Explains Yirenkyi’s Defensive Role Amid Selection Concerns
Otto Addo has clarified his tactical decision to deploy Caleb Yirenkyi in defence, insisting the move is driven by squad limitations rather than preference.
The Ghana head coach came under scrutiny following the Black Stars’ heavy defeat to Austria, where Yirenkyi was used on the right side of defence despite naturally being a midfielder.
Addressing concerns after the match, Addo explained that the team currently lacks depth in that position, forcing the technical team to improvise.
“In his club he has played as a defensive midfielder. We are having problems at that very position [right-back],” Addo said.
He further highlighted the imbalance in the squad, noting that while midfield options are abundant, defensive alternatives—particularly on the right—remain limited.
“Caleb jumped into that position. We have a lot of midfielders and our problem is that side. Now we are happy to get Marvin; he’s new to the system so we have to see,” he added.
The introduction of Marvin Senaya offers a potential solution, though Addo stressed that the player is still adapting to the team’s setup.
“At the moment, we didn’t have enough options at the right side and we have a lot of options in the midfield…that is why he [Yirenkyi] predominantly plays there,” he concluded.
Yirenkyi faced a difficult outing in the defensive role during the defeat, but the coach’s comments underline a broader structural issue within the squad rather than an isolated tactical gamble.
With a high-profile clash against Germany looming, Addo and his technical team will be hoping to find better balance as the Black Stars look to bounce back from their setback.
