Otto Addo Explains Decision to Start Benjamin Asare in Ghana’s Win Over Chad
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has shed light on his decision to hand goalkeeper Benjamin Asare his debut in Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Despite having experienced shot-stoppers like Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wollacott available, Addo opted for the Hearts of Oak captain, a move that raised some eyebrows before kickoff. However, Asare justified his selection with a composed performance, keeping a clean sheet as Ghana dominated their opponents.
Explaining his choice after the match, Addo stated that Asare’s strong performances in training earned him the nod.
“We assessed all our goalkeepers and watched several games. It was a close call, but Benjamin stood out in training,” he revealed.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper repaid his coach’s faith by making crucial saves and organizing his defense well, ensuring Ghana secured a comfortable win that propelled them to the top of Group I.
With the Black Stars now shifting focus to their next qualifier against Madagascar on Monday, Addo’s bold decision appears to have paid off, adding further competition for the starting goalkeeper position moving forward.
