“No Player Is Commanding $1 Million Transfer from Ghana’s League”- George Afriyie
Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has expressed deep concern about the declining commercial and developmental value of Ghanaian football, citing the lack of high-value player transfers as evidence.
He believes a return to long-term planning, grassroots investment, and club strengthening is essential if Ghana is to regain its status as a hub for top-tier football exports.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Afriyie pointed out that no Ghana-based player is currently commanding a transfer fee of $1 million or more, a sharp contrast to the country’s past reputation for producing marketable talents.
“No player is hitting a $1 million transfer from Ghana these days, yet we’re more focused on personal glory than developing the game,” Afriyie stated.
He lamented that stakeholders in the sport seem more interested in individual accolades and political positioning rather than creating systems that nurture talent and generate economic value for clubs and players alike.
Afriyie’s comments highlight the growing disconnect between football administration and actual player development in Ghana.
His remarks come amidst widespread calls for reforms and renewed direction in Ghanaian football, following disappointing performances by the men’s national teams and declining league competitiveness.
