Asante Kotoko have moved swiftly to address reports surrounding the absence of interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu, insisting the narrative suggesting he abandoned the team is inaccurate.

Speculation had emerged that the coach failed to report to training on Thursday, raising concerns about unrest within the club. However, Kotoko have clarified that Owusu’s absence was both communicated and approved by management.

In an official statement signed by Communications Director Samuel Sarfo Duku, the club explained that the coach is currently attending to personal matters following a bereavement.

“The club wishes to firmly debunk rumours suggesting that Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has left the team’s camp without notice. These claims are untrue. Prince duly sought permission from management to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his beloved mother. He is expected to return to Kumasi this morning and any further updates or decisions will be officially communicated in due course.”

The clarification comes after earlier reports claimed Owusu’s absence was linked to security concerns, with suggestions he had stayed away due to alleged threats from sections of the club’s fanbase. During that period, assistant coach Mohammed Hamza Obeng reportedly took charge of training.

Kotoko’s recent form has intensified scrutiny on the technical bench. Since taking over, Owusu has overseen eight matches, recording two wins, two draws, and four defeats.
