Kim Lars Pleased with Black Queens Progress as WAFCON Preparations Gather Pace
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has given a positive assessment of his side’s recent training camp, expressing satisfaction with the team’s development as preparations continue for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Swedish tactician believes the camp has provided valuable learning opportunities for his players despite a number of challenges encountered along the way.
Speaking to GFA Communications, Björkegren highlighted the importance of the friendly matches played during the training period, particularly a demanding encounter against a boys’ team that tested the Black Queens physically and tactically.
“We have played two games and I would say especially the game that we had yesterday against the boys was a really like tough one for us, but it’s really important for us. We know the physical aspect of football is important and we know the difference by nature between boys and girls,” he said.
According to the coach, the match offered a realistic challenge that forced his players to adapt and find solutions against opponents with greater physical advantages.
“So, they will challenge us when it comes to speed. And some of them were stronger and taller. So, we needed to be smarter to stay in the game, but we worked really hard. We had a good defense and some I’m really happy with that especially the game that we had yesterday and overall the camp have been good.”
The Black Queens have been using the camp to sharpen their fitness levels, improve tactical understanding and strengthen team chemistry ahead of the continental tournament in Morocco.
Although adverse weather conditions disrupted parts of the programme, Björkegren praised the squad’s response and the technical team’s ability to adapt.
“We have missed a couple of training because of the weather, but that’s also out of our control. Instead, we have been working out in the gym and had a lot of meetings. So, I’m overall I’m I’m really happy with this camp,” he added.
The Black Queens are aiming to build on their recent progress as they prepare for WAFCON 2026, where Ghana will be seeking a strong performance against some of Africa’s top women’s football nations.
With the tournament drawing closer, Björkegren and his technical staff remain focused on fine-tuning the squad and ensuring the players are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
