Head coach of the Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has expressed strong confidence in his side’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as Ghana prepares to face Egypt in a crucial two-legged qualifier.

The team, which claimed bronze at the 2024 WAFCON, has been in camp in Morocco fine-tuning preparations for the first-leg encounter against the North Africans on October 23, 2025.

Speaking ahead of the game, the Swedish tactician said he was delighted to reunite with his players and believes they are mentally and physically ready for the challenge.

“It’s great to be back with the girls. It’s been too long since the great tournament that we had. We came together as a really strong group. We performed well on the pitch and had so much fun off the pitch as well. We are in a good place,” he told Ghanafa.org.

Björkegren acknowledged the limited preparation time but insisted that the team’s energy and unity would drive them forward in the encounter.

“Of course, you always want more days to prepare for important games like against Egypt, but otherwise we have really good energy and we’re looking forward to playing another two games here,” he added.

The coach, who guided Ghana to a historic podium finish in 2024, emphasized his belief in the team’s fighting mentality and determination to win.

“You can expect always a hard-working team that’s going to do everything we can to win. We have shown that even if we are struggling a little bit in the game, we always come back, and that shows that we have a great fighting spirit — that we’re fighting for each other and do everything to win every single game.”

The Black Queens will play the first leg in Cairo before returning home to host Egypt in the decisive second leg at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, with hopes of advancing to the next stage of the qualifiers and sealing a spot at WAFCON 2026.
