“Joseph Commey is not on my level” – Samuel Takyi dismisses potential bout
Ghanaian Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi has stirred controversy with strong remarks about rising star Joseph Commey, stating he has no intention of facing him in the ring due to what he sees as a lack of experience.
He made the comments during an interview on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show, where he outlined his ambitions and explained why he believes Commey is not a suitable match at this stage of his career.
Takyi, who won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and later secured gold at the 2023 African Games, is now managed by UK-based Streetwise Management. His goal is to climb the international ranks and secure a shot at a world title, rather than engage in domestic matchups that, in his view, do little to advance his professional standing.
Takyi, who has now transitioned to professional boxing, made it clear that his focus is on more established opponents.
“Joseph Commey is not on my level; he has only had two fights. I want to fight someone with a high-profile background, so I can’t face him in the ring. I have seven bouts, and I’m targeting opponents with good records to gain something from them,” he said.
Takyi’s previous outing in Lagos, back in August 2022, saw him secure a first-round victory over Nigeria’s Samuel Moses in just 2 minutes and 54 seconds, under the guidance of former world champion Ike “Bazooka” Quartey.
His professional debut in South Africa at Emperor’s Palace, Kempton Park, was equally impressive, as he dismantled local favorite Mandlenkosi Sibuso in two rounds, again with Quartey’s mentorship.
