Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has sent a strong message to league leaders Asante Kotoko, insisting the Ghana Premier League title race is still wide open despite his team trailing by five points.

The Kpando-based club suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bibiani Gold Stars, a result that saw them drop to third place with 40 points. Kotoko continue to lead the pack with 45 points, while Gold Stars sit second with 44 points.

Speaking after the match, Hayford remained optimistic about his team’s chances, emphasizing that with several games left, anything can happen.

“We have about ten matches left, and ten matches mean 30 points,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“If someone is leading by five points and there are still 30 points to fight for, we can’t just relax and assume they have won already.”

The experienced tactician further stressed that even larger gaps have been overcome in football.

“It is not over. Even when someone leads by ten points, you can still catch up. We will keep pushing and see what we can achieve.”

Heart of Lions will have the opportunity to close the gap on Kotoko when the two sides face off in a crucial encounter on April 6 at the Kpando Stadium. A victory for Lions could blow the title race wide open, making the final stretch of the season even more competitive.
