Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan says he takes pride in his historic World Cup achievements but is eager to see a new wave of Black Stars players surpass his accomplishments on football’s biggest stage.

Gyan remains Africa’s all-time top scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals—a record he set across three tournaments between 2006 and 2014. Nearly a decade after his final appearance, the former Black Stars captain says he views the milestone not as a personal trophy to guard but as a benchmark for Ghana’s rising talents.

Reflecting on his World Cup journey, Gyan described the record as a blessing and insisted it should inspire, not intimidate, the next generation.

“For me, records are set to be broken. So, personally I count myself lucky to be at that level, to score six goals in World Cup history… And yes, the record is there to be broken. So I wish this new generation well… One might come up and break the record,” he said.

Gyan’s impact at the World Cup remains unmatched on the continent, with goals against global powerhouses including the Czech Republic, USA, Germany, Australia, and Portugal. His iconic performances—particularly the dramatic moments in South Africa 2010—cemented his place among Africa’s finest forwards.

As Ghana prepares for another World Cup campaign, Gyan believes the spotlight will be on fresh talents who can write their own stories and potentially eclipse his legacy.
