Gideon Mensah reveals Black Stars adapting to Carlos Queiroz’s intense training regime
Gideon Mensah says the Black Stars are gradually adjusting to the demanding methods introduced by new head coach Carlos Queiroz as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Cardiff.
The defender, who featured for Ghana at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, opened up about the intensity of training sessions under the Portuguese tactician as the squad begins life under a new technical setup.
According to the Auxerre left-back, the team is being pushed physically with multiple sessions each day as Queiroz works to implement his ideas ahead of the tournament.
“I think it’s going very well. I mean, everybody’s looking sharp, we have a new coach who comes with a new form of training and everything,” Mensah said.
“I think it’s something that we are not used to. And then I think we are adapting very good. I mean, today we had two sessions. Yesterday was the same. And then I think we are building up very good.”
The Black Stars are currently holding their pre-World Cup camp in Wales as they prepare for an international friendly against the hosts on June 2.
Queiroz, who recently took charge of the team, is using the training camp to assess players and fine-tune his tactical approach before Ghana travel to North America for the tournament.
Mensah is among the experienced players expected to play a key role for Ghana at the World Cup, having already featured on the global stage four years ago.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, with the Black Stars aiming to progress beyond the group phase for the first time since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
