Ghana Rugby and World Rugby Launch ‘Rugby Rising Play’ to Empower Teenage Girls in Sport
The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), in collaboration with World Rugby, is set to unveil the Rugby Rising Play Project on Friday, 12th September 2025, at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.
The initiative marks World Rugby’s first-ever participation programme designed specifically for teenage girls, with the aim of increasing both recruitment and retention in the sport.
At its core, Rugby Rising Play seeks to create a clear pathway that enables young girls to progress into Tier 1 rugby and other competitive formats. The programme is built to equip participants with the technical skills, tactical awareness, and self-confidence required to thrive in rugby while encouraging lifelong involvement in the game.
More than just skill development, the project promotes rugby’s fundamental values of teamwork, discipline, respect, and integrity.
For the first time in Ghana, teenage girls will benefit from a structured framework tailored to their growth in the sport. The programme features 10 sessions carefully designed to build confidence, nurture talent, and unlock opportunities at the highest levels of the game.
Organisers describe the project as more than a sporting programme—it is a movement dedicated to empowering young women, dismantling barriers, and reshaping the future of rugby in Ghana and across Africa.
The message is clear: the future is female, the future is rugby—and it begins in Ghana.
