The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially approved comprehensive new regulations for the Ghana Premier League, the Division One League, and the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League, set to take effect from the 2025/26 season.

The decision follows an extensive review process aimed at streamlining the governance and administration of Ghana’s top-tier domestic competitions. The GFA says the updated regulatory framework is designed to enhance clarity, ensure uniformity, and improve the overall management of football activities across all levels.

According to the GFA, the revised regulations will improve matchday operations, competition rules, disciplinary procedures, league structures, and player eligibility standards. Additionally, the new regulatory framework integrates the GFA Registered Academies Licensing Regulations 2025, a step intended to align youth academies with national football development objectives.

The reforms are expected to foster fairness and compliance while encouraging club growth and sustainable player development. Similar regulatory updates have been approved for the Division One League and the Women’s Premier League, ensuring consistency across all domestic competitions.

In the coming days, the GFA will convene separate stakeholder meetings with the 18 Ghana Premier League clubs, the 48 Division One League clubs, and the 20 teams participating in the Women’s Premier League. These sessions will provide further clarity on the rollout and implementation of the new regulations.

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to commence between September 12 and 15, 2025, marking the beginning of a new era of administrative reform and improved standards in Ghanaian football.
