The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has addressed recent concerns regarding the financial management of the Black Stars, stating that all budget-related matters are solely handled by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

This clarification follows remarks by former President John Dramani Mahama during his State of the Nation Address, where he called for greater transparency in the funding and expenditure of Ghana’s senior national team.

In a statement, the GFA expressed appreciation for Mahama’s continued interest in Ghanaian football, emphasizing the need to improve the team’s performance and management structures.

“We also endorse His Excellency’s call for transparency in relation to the budgeting and expenditure related to the Black Stars and, by extension, all national teams,” the FA stated.

The FA, however, clarified that its role in financial matters is limited to submitting a draft budget for the Black Stars and other national teams to the Sports Ministry. The final budget approval, disbursement, and expenditure decisions are the responsibility of the government.

“Indeed, as part of our commitment to transparency, the GFA has always provided the Ministry responsible for Sports with the first draft budget for the national teams,” the statement read.

While addressing financial concerns, the GFA also noted that despite missing out on the 2025 AFCON, Ghana remains joint-top of its FIFA World Cup qualifying group, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring the team’s future success.

The debate over financial accountability in Ghanaian football continues, with stakeholders calling for clearer reporting structures to ensure efficient use of government funds in national team management.
