Francis Amuzu Dismisses Claims of Targeting Ghana Switch Only for the World Cup
Ghana-born Francis Amuzu, who currently plies his trade with Brazilian giants Grêmio, has refuted suggestions that his recent decision to represent Ghana is motivated solely by the country’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 26-year-old forward previously declined a call-up to the Black Stars in 2022 but has now openly declared his readiness to play for his birth nation. His announcement came shortly after Ghana secured their spot at the upcoming global showpiece — a timing that has prompted speculation among fans and pundits alike.
In an interview, Amuzu expressed pride in Ghana’s qualification but stressed that his intentions go beyond just featuring at the World Cup.
“I was born in Ghana, so I’m happy that they qualified for the World Cup. It’s a wonderful tournament also to play,”
he said — remarks that led some to accuse him of being an opportunist.
The Grêmio attacker, however, clarified that he is open to representing Ghana at any point, whether before or after the tournament.
“If it’s for the World Cup, it will be nice,” he told Asempa FM.
“If it’s after the World Cup, it’s also nice, I will be happy. It is a dream for me to play for the national team Ghana.
I know also that I have to perform well to get a call-up. If it [call-up] comes, good. If it doesn’t come, I have to work harder.”
Amuzu, who represented Belgium at the U-19 and U-21 levels, remains eligible to switch his international allegiance under FIFA regulations, provided he completes the formal nationality change process.
The winger has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Grêmio, with his pace and technical quality earning him plaudits in the Brazilian Série A — form that could soon see him don the Black Stars jersey for the first time.
