Faith Ladies Clinch Women’s FA Cup After Extra-Time Thriller Against Jonina Ladies
Faith Ladies emerged as champions of the 2024/25 Women’s FA Cup after defeating Jonina Ladies 2-1 in a thrilling final that went into extra time at the Madina Astro Turf on Sunday.
In a tense contest that saw few clear-cut chances in regulation time, both sides battled hard but failed to break the deadlock during the initial 90 minutes. The early stages of the match were defined by physical challenges and nerves, with Faith Ladies’ Anastasia Bansah shown a yellow card in the 8th minute for a heavy tackle.
Jonina Ladies were forced into an early tactical change in the 41st minute, replacing Abigail Bosu with Lordina Osei to inject some energy into the midfield.
With the scoreline still 0-0 at full time, the game proceeded into extra time, where the drama truly unfolded.
Jonina Ladies struck first blood in the 97th minute when Joyce Atimbila capitalised on a defensive lapse to give her side the lead. However, their joy was short-lived as Faith Ladies responded almost immediately through forward Erica Obeng Apreku, who found the equaliser just a minute later.
Apreku, clearly in inspired form, returned to haunt Jonina in the 112th minute with a well-taken second goal, completing her brace and handing Faith Ladies a 2-1 lead.
Jonina Ladies pushed desperately for another equaliser in the closing stages, but Faith Ladies held firm with disciplined defending and smart game management to see out the victory.
The triumph marks a significant achievement for Faith Ladies, who showcased resilience and quality to clinch one of the top honours in Ghanaian women’s football. Erica Obeng Apreku’s heroic performance will undoubtedly go down as one of the defining moments of the tournament.
