Daniel-Kofi Kyereh Joins VfL Osnabrück on Free Transfer
Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has completed a move to German second-tier club VfL Osnabrück, joining the side as a free agent as he looks to rebuild his career following a lengthy battle with injury.
The 30-year-old attacking midfielder has signed with Osnabrück after spending an extended period on the sidelines following a serious cruciate ligament injury.
Kyereh will reunite with head coach Timo Schultz, who previously worked with the Ghanaian during their successful spell together at FC St. Pauli.
It was under Schultz that Kyereh enjoyed one of the most productive periods of his career. Across two seasons at St. Pauli, he made 62 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, registering 21 goals and 20 assists.
His standout campaign came in the 2021/22 season, when he contributed 12 goals and 10 assists, performances that attracted the attention of Bundesliga clubs and earned him a move to SC Freiburg in 2022.
Kyereh subsequently featured in the UEFA Europa League for Freiburg before suffering a cruciate ligament injury in February 2023. His recovery was complicated by setbacks, keeping him out of competitive football for an extended period.
He eventually returned to action this year, making seven appearances for Freiburg’s reserve team in the Regionalliga.
Osnabrück had been monitoring his rehabilitation, with the club’s Head of Performance Sebastian Schwermann closely following his physical progress and fitness levels.
The German club believes Kyereh can gradually regain full fitness and become an important contributor. He will wear the number seven shirt at the Bremer Brücke.
Osnabrück technical director Daniel Latkowski has also highlighted the Ghanaian’s attacking qualities, particularly his ability to score, create opportunities and influence matches through his technical ability and understanding of the game.
Schultz is equally optimistic about Kyereh’s potential to rediscover his best form.
“From our collaboration, I know what special qualities Kofi possesses as a footballer and as a person. He was an absolute game-changer at St. Pauli,” Schultz said.
Kyereh, meanwhile, acknowledged the difficulties he has faced during his prolonged absence but insists his belief in making a comeback never disappeared.
“The past few years have been a very difficult time for me. But I never lost faith in my ability to return to the pitch,” Kyereh said.
