Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has stressed the need for his team to be more clinical in front of goal after Ghana were forced to share the spoils with Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The four-time African champions were held to a 1-1 stalemate on Thursday afternoon in Matchday 7 at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno in N’Djamena.

Ghana looked set for a crucial away win when Jordan Ayew opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but a late strike from Celestine Ecua in the 88th minute denied them maximum points and left the Black Stars frustrated.

Reflecting on the result, Addo admitted his side wasted too many chances despite enjoying control of the game.

“I can’t say we played excellently or we played well because it was a draw. The result is everything we had a lot of corners, we did nothing out of that,” he noted.

“We had a lot of shots, attempts on goal, we had a lot of ball possession, and normally we have to win this game. This, in the end, surely, is not good enough, and we have to improve, especially on our execution,” he added.

Ghana will quickly shift focus to their next assignment as they welcome Mali to the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8, in a decisive Matchday 8 clash set to kick off at 19:00 GMT.

Despite the disappointment in Chad, the Black Stars still sit at the summit of Group I with 16 points as the race for World Cup qualification heats up.
