Bashir Hayford Targets Premier League Glory with Heart of Lions
Heart of Lions head coach, Bashir Hayford, has set his sights on guiding the club to the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League title after narrowly missing out last season.
Lions have already kicked off the new campaign on a high, beating Dreams FC 1-0 in their season opener.
The Kpando-based side impressed in the 2024/25 campaign, finishing second on the table, just three points adrift of eventual champions Bibiani Gold Stars. Despite the strong showing, Hayford admits his team’s shortcomings on the road cost them the chance to claim the crown.
“So many things have opened my eyes. When you are coaching big clubs, the aura is different from coaching a smaller club. So sometimes it’s difficult to win matches away as a small club. But for big clubs, you don’t fear whether you are playing home or away,” Hayford explained in an interview with 3Sports.
“I think that has taught me a lesson that I have to be wary of our away matches because if we had made some inputs in the away matches, I think we would have won the league last season. And another lesson is that we drew about three matches at home. That one also affected us. So I have to watch our home and away matches if we want to win the league.”
Determined to avoid a repeat of last season’s mistakes, the experienced trainer has challenged his players to improve their consistency both home and away to strengthen their title credentials.
Their next assignment will see them travel to Techiman for a tough Week 2 battle against Eleven Wonders.
