African Senior Athletics Championships has officially been unveiled in Accra, setting the stage for one of Africa’s biggest sporting gatherings as Ghana intensifies preparations to host the 2026 edition.

The competition, scheduled to run from May 12 to May 17 at the University of Ghana Stadium, is expected to attract elite athletes from across the continent.

At the official launch, Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, highlighted the broader significance of the event beyond competition, calling for sustained investment in athletics infrastructure nationwide.

“Athletics remains a sport that can galvanize our nation and drive development if we make the right investments,” he said.

He further pointed to existing gaps in facilities across the country, stressing the need to create better training environments for emerging talents.

“It is not right that some regions in Ghana do not have proper tracks for our budding athletes to train on. Accra 2026 must provide a platform for our young athletes to see what is possible. That is why we must create opportunities for them to witness what the senior athletes are doing. It will serve as a source of motivation.”

The 2026 edition will mark the first time Ghana hosts the prestigious championships, presenting an opportunity for the country to showcase its growing capacity to stage major international sporting events.

Beyond the competition itself, organisers are hopeful the tournament will leave a lasting legacy by inspiring young athletes and accelerating the development of athletics across the nation.
