AFCON 2023: Chris Hughton bemoans lack of quality in front of goal after Namibia draw

The head coach of the Black Star, Chris Hughton, has lamented his team’s inability to finish off chances in games.

This comes after Ghana’s goalless draw against Namibia at the Baba Yara stadium in a friendly ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which starts in four days.

The Black Stars have scored only one goal in their last four games under the Irish trainer which has seen lots of concerns among fans.

“I didn’t think we were good enough on the ball in the first half period. The second half, of course, [was] better but the game opens up. The game opens up, and I think we were able to capitalise then on the spaces, and then it becomes the job then to score goals,” Hughton said after the game.

“And of course, we entered a final third a lot more in the second half than what we did in the first half. But either, perhaps a lack of quality at times saw us not get opportunities. I think you have to credit them. I think they defended very well in their moments. But we had to make more of the possession that we had, and particularly the possession we had in the final third.”

As the AFCON approaches, the spotlight is on the Black Stars to address these concerns and demonstrate an improved performance in front of goal.

Ghana are in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
